I thought I would share a bit of my “quick and dirty” WiFi fixes with everyone.

    1. Channels (AirCheck, Spectrum XT)
    – More channels means more capacity
    – 80MHz – small deployment with no interference
    – 40MHz – with thick walls, one floor, and/or small deployments
    – 20MHz – by default
    – DFS – use it if possible, avoid ch144 unless all clients are 11ac
    – Channel Utilization – keep it less than 20% for voice, 50% for video, and 80% for data

    2. Required/Supported Data Rates (AirCheck, Protocol Analyzer)
    – 24Mbps minimum
    – Disable 11b rates for max performance
    – More SNR is better, but 25dB is good
    – TKIP – no, WMM – yes

    3. CCI (Spectrum XT & Site Survey App)
    – Too many 2.4GHz radios enabled
    – Not enough 5GHz channels in reuse plan
    – AP output power too high

    4. SSIDs (AirCheck, Protocol Analyzer)
    – 4 or less recommended
    – Don’t hide SSIDs when possible

    5. AP Placement & Mounting (visual inspection)
    – Antenna type and orientation
    – Proper mounting of APs
